The Difference Between Silicone Sealant and MS Polymer Sealant

By LOTFIX / May 08,2025

As environmentally friendly building materials are increasingly respected, high-performance adhesives such as Silicone sealants and MS polymer sealants are gradually entering the public eye. Many people have questions about these two products that are often used in daily building materials and want to understand the differences between them. Next, we will explain the characteristics and differences of these two products in detail.

DIFFERENCE

1. Ingredient differences

Silicone sealants are mainly composed of 107 silicone oil, silica and other ingredients. It cures quickly, is not easy to foam, and can achieve firm bonding with the surface of non-porous materials. At the same time, the sealant also exhibits excellent resistance to moisture, heat and aging, as well as good storage stability. MS polymer sealants are silane-terminated polyethers based on polyurethane groups. It is not only non-toxic and odorless, but also has a low VOC content, and has excellent stability, compatibility and uniformity.

2. Differences in properties

Silicone sealants are in an ointment state. Once they come into contact with moisture in the air, they solidify into a hard rubber-like solid. It has excellent heat resistance and can withstand the test of high and low temperature environments. MS polymer sealant, as a cross-linked polymer based on silane-terminated polyether, will undergo condensation reaction in the molecular chain under the combined action of moisture and suitable catalysts, releasing water and alcohol substances, thereby achieving the curing and cross-linking of molecules to form an elastomer. However, it is worth noting that due to the relatively low bond energy of polyether, the C-O bond is easy to break, so the heat resistance of MS polymer sealant is slightly inferior.

3. Viscosity difference

Silicone sealants show strong adhesion and tensile strength, and at the same time, their weather resistance and shock resistance are also quite good. MS polymer sealants are characterized by their good adhesion, which can effectively absorb and compensate for dynamic loads and ensure uniform force transmission.

4. Differences in application fields

There are many types of silicone sealants, such as acid sealants, neutral weather-resistant sealants and structural sealants, which play an important role in the construction field. Silicone sealants are often used for caulking and sealing of doors and windows, interior decoration projects, and sealing of insulating glass. In particular, structural silicone sealants are widely used in the bonding and sealing of structural assemblies such as glass curtain walls, stone curtain walls, and steel structures, and their application range is very wide. On the other hand, MS polymer sealants show strong bonding to engineering plastics such as acrylic and ABS, as well as porous materials such as concrete. Therefore, they are widely used in electronic sealants, industrial sealants, building exterior sealants, and various adhesives suitable for interior industrial assembly.

The above are the differences between silicone sealants and MS polymer sealants. In fact, these two types of sealants have shown unique advantages in their respective fields and have irreplaceable positions. When choosing, you should choose a type of sealant with better functions according to the specific application scenarios and needs.
